Pam Kettler, our Lead Designer, worked closely with designer, Jan Conti, and DCA Landscape Architects to oversee the development and maintenance of Ballantrae Farm. Above, the Parterre Garden, with a bulb planting by Jan and Pam, that was featured on the Garden Club of Virginia’s state-wide publications in 2021.

The grounds at Ballantrae were frequently published. Above, Home & Design showcases another perspective of the Parterre Garden. It is viewed from the Family Room, showing interiors designed by Caldwell-Beebe Ltd. and Richard Williams Architects.

Masses of Rosa ‘Tequila’ were selected to complement the carderock stone of the Main House. These proved to have incredible disease resistance and much more dynamic colors than Knockout Roses. Containers by Pam, flanked the entrance here. Great lengths were went to secure the initial planting and replace it without substitution. It was worth it.

Pam and Jan designed a new planting bed that framed a view to the lovely guest house after a Magnolia declined and its removal changed the light.

With old English Boxwoods in slow decline- the planting at the Fountain Garden was constantly evolving but we sought to keep its long held character with more disease resistant types. The filler in the pavers was also a challenge to find a good fit for with very alkaline, damp soil, and dense shade. The result was a favorite garden room- with a water feature that was elegant and alive with Robins during certain times of year.

Time that Pam spent gardening in a meadow in Central Virginia, designed by Roy Diblik, inspired further study in native plantings and organic management practices.
